  • 1. Universidade Presbiteriana Mackenzie

Description

Abstract: Elizabeth Philpot (1780-1857) was an important fossilist of the 19th century. Born in London, Philpot moved in 1805 to Lyme Regis, Dorset, England; a rapidly developing fossiliferous center at the time. In this new city, Elizabeth began to take interest in the fossils there present and to collect them, something common for the inhabitants of this Pearl of Dorset - who increasingly explored the region's sedimentary coasts in search of fossils to sell to tourists. Through this new interest, Philpot became friends with several historical characters in the field of paleontology and geology, such as: Mary Anning, William Buckland, Mary Buckland and Louis Agassiz. Furthermore, with her vast collection of fossils, Elizabeth Philpot helped to develop these areas of science; among her most notorious finds is an almost complete specimen of Plesiosaurus, which filled important gaps in the natural history and classification of prehistoric reptiles.
