Description

Family CHLAMYPHORIDAE

(CHLAMYPHORID ARMADILLOS)

• Fairly small to large with osseous carapace covering backs, heads, and, in most species, tails; large anterior Class for digging; and omnivorous, carnivorous, or insectivores with simple and homodont teeth.

• 14-150 cm.

• Neotropical Region.

Deserts, savannas, and forests from cold temperate zones to tropics.

• 3 genera, 13 species, 20 taxa.

• 2 species Vulnerable; none extinct since 1600.
