Description

Family ABROCOMIDAE

(CHINCHILLA RATS AND INCA RATS)

• Mediumto large-sized rodents with long soft fur, dense underfur, and flat-crowned maxillary cheekteeth with enamel ridges in a figure-8 occlusal pattern.

• 20-30 cm.

• Neotropical Region.

• Arid temperate montane, lowland Mediterranean chaparral, and tropical cloud forests.

• 2 genera, 10 species, 11 taxa.

• 1 species Critically Endangered; 1 species classified as Extinct but recently found still extant; none Extinct since 1600.
