Endémicas e exóticas nos jardins botânicos do paço de Nossa Senhora da Ajuda e da Universidade de Coimbra

RESUMO: Os jardins botânicos tomam como ideal de realização o imperativo de se constituírem enquanto colecções — imagens privilegiadas da Natureza, cenário do grande espectáculo que é o mundo da criação divina. E porque esta é ordenável, mesmo a nível do (d) escrever, são precisos métodos e outras técnicas para a classificar (ver Dagognet, 1953; Delaporte, 1979). Já no século XVII, mas com maior incidência a partir do século XVIII, findas as harmonias e as analogias para sempre perdidas, a Razão estabelece uma distância ambígua com a Natureza, e até com a Humanidade. Por isso, fala de um pólo subjectivo valorado, mas atribui ao referente aspectos de inacessibilidade. Por isso, hesita, ainda, em termos antropo — sociológicos, entre o bom selvagem e o honnête homme, dito civilizado. No que respeita o conhecimento, nuns casos, predominam preocupações dirigidas pela lógica que orienta o sistema da natura e da cultura, noutros casos, sobressai a descrição: importa inventariar ou sintetizar, o inventário seguindo Plínio, o sistema seguindo Aristóteles. Nos jardins botânicos, a síntese entre natural e artístico, subentendendo um ecletismo de engenho e de artifício, organiza-se através de uma unidade de destinos, mistura de raridades e curiosidades tendendo para a pletora: o escasso é valorado, como se valora o diferente; o insólito cria efeitos de sedução vegetal. Neste contexto, as exigências de complitude que presidem às colecções têm de incluir a abundância, por via dos Novos Mundos. Assim sendo, as novidades produzidas pela luxúria das coisas exóticas (exótico = aquilo de que pouco ou nunca se ouviu falar) exigem um esforço de ordem com foros de mathesis universalis. O exótico acrescenta ao endémico um toque de mundialização. O sistema epistémico que preside a esta expressão do conhecimento especifica um articulado muito próprio em termos de universo lógico, como se verifica frequentemente nos saberes em torno dos Três Reinos da Natureza (ver Viterbo, 1908-1909).

ENDEMIC AND EXOTIC PLANTS IN THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF THE PALACE OF NOSSA SENHORA DA AJUDA AND OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA

Abstract: The ideal of botanical gardens is their imperative to become collections — privileged images of Nature, the scene of the great spectacle which is the world of divine creation. And because this can be organized, even at the level of description and writing, methods and other techniques are required for classification (see Dagognet, 1953; Delaporte, 1979). Already in the 17th century, but more often from the 18th century onwards, after the harmonies had ended and analogies had been lost forever,, Reason established an ambiguous distance to Nature and even to Mankind. Therefore one speaks of a valued subjective pole, but assigns aspects of inaccessibility to the reference. Therefore, one still hesitates in anthroposociological terms between the good savage and the so-called civilized honnête homme. As regards knowledge, in some cases concerns guided by the logic that guides the system of natura and cultura predominate, in other cases it is the description that stands out: it is important to perform an inventory or synthesis according to Pliny, the system according to Aristotle. In botanical gardens, the synthesis between what is natural and what is artistic infers eclecticism in ingeniousness and artifice, is organized by means of a unity of destinies, mixing rarities and curios, tending to plethora: what is scarce is valued, as is what is different; the unusual creates effects of vegetal seduction. In this context, the demands of complitude that rule the collections must include abundance, through the New Worlds. Thus, the novelties produced by the exuberance of exotic things (exotic=that of which one has heard tell little or never) require an effort for order with fora of mathesis universalis. The exotic added a touch of globalization to the endemic. The epistemic system which rules this expression of knowledge specifies a very distinct articulation in terms of a logical universe, as frequently seen in the knowledges around the Three Kingdoms of Nature (see Viterbo, 1908-1909).
