As in the case of ethyl a-methyl-$\alpha$-acetamido-$\beta$-phenylpropionate (Part V, this $Journal$, 1959, ³⁸1 425), the corresponding $\alpha$-ethyl or apropyl analogue has furnished, when 'treated with P₂O₅ in an inert solvent, $I$-methyl-3-ethyl (or propyl)I-soquinoline, the structure of which has been confirmed by an independent synthesis.
