Description

Family ELEPHANTIDAE (ELEPHANTS)

• Largest terrestrial mammals with stout body, characteristic long, highly dexterous proboscis extended from upper lip, large ears, column-like limbs, and small tail.

• 670-900 cm.

• Afrotropical and Indo-Malayan Regions.

• All major habitats in Africa, including tropical forest, woodland, savanna, and desert; primarily wooded habitats in Asia.

• 2 genera, 3 species, 3 taxa.

• 2 species Endangered, 1 species Vulnerable; none Extinct since 1600.
