Reactions of Nickel Ions with Nitroso-Naphthols II. Formation and Dissociation Kinetics of Some Nickel Complexes.

Description

Chemistry Department, University of the West Indies, Mona, Kingston 7, Jamaica.

The dissociation kinetics of NiL (HL=1-nitroso-2.-naphthol, 1-nitr so-2-naphthol 6-sulphonate, 1-nitroso· 2.-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonate and 2.-nitroso-1-naphthol-4-sulphonate) in aqueous acidic solution are reported as functions of ionic strength and temperature and Arrhenius parameters deduced. The kinetics of formation of NiL (HL= 2 nitroso-1-naphthol-4-sulphonate and 1-nitroso-2-naphthol-3, 6-disulphonate) are also reported at 25°C. In both the aissociation and formations the behaviour or the -3·6-disulphonate complex is unusual. It is suggested that an unusually strong proton bridge may exist between the substituents in the -2- and -3-positions.
