Kinetics of Oxidation of Malonic and Malic Acids by Cerium(VI)

The kinetics of oxidation of malonic and malic acids by Ce(IV) has been investigated in H₂SO_4, H₂PO₄ and CH₃COOH acids. The influence of H⁺ on the rate of the reactions at constant ionic strength has been carefully examined. Ce(III) sulphate has been found to significantly retard the reaction. A mechanism of the oxidations consistent with these observations has been proposed.
