Hermeneia, poiesis and translation

This entry deals with the relationship between hermeneutics and translation. Translation is viewed as a special process of communication, because it consists of both an receptive or interpretative process and a productive or creative one, and these processes must fulfil the conditions of correspondence and coherence. Thence, translation will be described, analysed and explained from a complex point of view based on the theoretical concepts of ‘interpretation’ and ‘transitivity.’ Alongside this, the connection of hermeneutics and translation will be investigated as to its common issues with literary criticism and ecdotics —or textual criticism— within a general theory of transduction. The organisation of the entry will consist of the following parts: (1) Introduction; (2) Betti and translation as reproductive and representative interpretation; (3) Classical theories of reading and writing in relation to translation; (4) Hermeneutics and its connection to translation; (5) The transitive interpretation of the source language text; (6) An updating of Jakobson’s three kinds of translation; (7) A hermeneutic-poietic model for translation; and (8) Research potential. Some original notions proposed by the authors of the entry will be dealt with, developed and included in the resulting hermeneutic-poietic model, for instance: the role of intellectio or noesis in the hermeneutics of translation, the communicative cultural-rhetorical code and polyacroasis in the hermeneutic activity of translator and its effects on his/her poietic activity.
