Kinetics and Mechanism of Iodine Oxidation of Coordinated Formate

The kinetics and mechanism of iodine oxidation of coordinated formate in formato­pentaamminecobalt(III) perchlorate have been investigated. The order of the reaction both with respect to the oxidant and the substrate is unity. The reaction is catalysed by iodide ion. I^-₂ seems to be the active oxidising species. Effects of pH and ionic strength on the rate of the reaction have been examined. The rate and activation para­meters have been evaluated and a possible mechanism suggested.
