Manuscript received 19 October 1981, revised 6 June 1983, accepted 30 May 1984

A number of homobinuclear complexes, having the general formula (ML)2.H2L', where M=Li, Na or K; L=deprotonated organic acid (anthranilic or salicylic), o-nitrophenol, 1-nitroso.2-naphthol, 2-hydroxy-3.naphthoic acid or 8-hydroxyquinoline ; and H2L'=bis-(8-hydroxy-5-quinolyl)methane, have been obtained. All the complexes are characteristically coloured.

The ir spectra of the products point to the presence of hydrogen bonding which may be one of the dominant factors for their stabilisation. The analytical data suggest a coordination number four for the alkali metals. Thermal, ir and solution studies reveal that these adducts are genuine complexes.
