A kinetic study of the oxidation of glutamic acid by chloramine-T in aqueous alkaline media has been made. The findings follow the expression :

ddt[CAT]=[CAT][S][NaOH] when [NaOH] < 4.8  x 10-2 M

ddt[CAT]=[CAT][S][NaOH] when [NaOH] < 4.8  x 10-2 M

Similarly, for Cu(ll) catalysed reaction

ddt[CAT]=[CAT][S][Cu(II)][NaOH] when [NaOH] < 4.8  x 10-2 M

which assumes the form

ddt [CAT]=(CAT][S-]  [Cu(II) when(NaOH) > 4.8 x 10 -2  M

Cu(II) catalyses the reaction and the catalytic action of Cu(II) is ascribed to the complex formation with glutamic acid anion. A negligible influence of added neutral salt on the reaction rate indicates interaction between a neutral molecule and -an ion in the rate-determining step.
