Perennial herbs. Rhizomes somewhat thickened, creeping, with a tuft of leaves at apex. Radical leaf blade ovate, cordate, subacute or obtuse, 4-9 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, shallowly or obsoletely lobulate, irregularly toothed, upper surface sparsely hirsute, dark green, lower surface papillose-pilose, pale green often with purplish tinge; petiole 7-15 cm long, hirsute, with fused axillary stipules at base; stipules scarious, oblong, sparsely minutely hairy along margin. Flowering stems ca. 25 cm tall, erect, densely glandular pubescent, hirsute toward base. Inflorescences racemes, many-flowered. Flowers April; pedicel ca. 2 mm long, minutely glandular. Calyx tube campanulate-obconical, densely glandular pubescent, brownish; calyx lobes 5, triangular, acute, nearly glabrous adaxially, glandular abaxially, ca. 1.4 mm long, erect or slightly recurved near tip, brownish purple. Petals 5, subulate-linear or rarely with 1 (or 2) short lobes on one or both sides, glabrous, 1.5-3 mm long, often ca. 5 mm long and 3(or 4)(or 5)-pinnatiparted with obliquely ascending pinnae and glandular dots, reflexed, reddish purple. Stamens 5, alternate calyx lobes, adjacent to base of petals, 1-1.4 mm long; anthers broadly ovoid, cordate, ca. 1 mm long at anthesis, yellow. Disc inconspicuous. Ovary inferior. Styles 2, erect, thick at base, ca. 1.4 mm long; stigmas thickened, 4-lobed. Seeds oblong, ca. 1.1 mm long, scabrous and densely papillose, brownish.
Chromosome number: 2n = 28 (Wakabayashi 1973).
Japan: C. Honshu (Ibuki and Suzuka Mountains in Shiga and Gifu Pref.). Moist, shady places along streams in mountainous areas. Endemic.
