Pegomya

Description

Pegomya sp. aff. granadensis Ackland

Fig. 4.

Description. Female. Small (WL 4.0mm; n=1). Resembling P. granadensis by presence of erect discal setae on tergite V and a weak setal tuft at hind margin of sternite V, but different as follows: Head and thorax covered in light bluish grey dusting, on mesonotum with traces of three narrow dark stripes. Abdomen with very thin dusting, appearing shiny black. Frons wider, at narrowest point 0.38x as wide as total head. Frontal vitta without interfrontal setae or setulae. Posterior posthumeral seta present, although weaker than anterior posthumeral seta. Proepimerals 3 setae, 0 setulae. Vein C distal to subcostal break without dorsal setulae. Sternite V with hind marginal setae less numerous, forming a very loose tuft. Terminalia, apart from the exposed distal portion of segment VII, not examined.

Taxonomic remarks. The present female specimen almost certainly represents a new species, but it is not described at the present time because descriptions of new anthomyiid taxa should always be avoided in the absence of the male sex. Due to the entirely black ground colour of the head, body and appendages, it is tempting to combine it with a similarly dark-coloured male specimen from Greece described below as Pegomya skulei sp. nov., but several characters actually suggest a closer relationship with P. granadensis Ackland: vein C without dorsal setulae; tergite V with erect discal setae; sternite V with hind marginal setae quite Material examined. TURKEY [ZMUC]: Nevsehir: Avanos–Ürgüp area, 1000m, 1 female 4–6.v.1993 (V. Michelsen).

Distribution. Known by a single female from Kappadókia in central Anatolia (Turkey).
