Description
Palaeothyridosmylus sp.
Figs. 3–4
Description. Only the hind wing preserved, 21.5mm long and 7.3mm wide. Membrane with color markings, forming some distinct fenestrated spots (potentially hind wing with hyaline membrane, and the markings from the fore wing). Trichosors indistinct, pterostigma light color. Costal space narrow, cross-veins simple. Venation hard to discern due to poor preservation; Rs stem arising from the R instead from the base of wing (very likely due to poor preservation); Rs with numerous branches, cross-veins in radial sector faint, arranging irregularly. m-cu cross-vein missing probably due to poor preservation; Cu forking at base, Cu2 with numerous oblique pectinated branches. A1 about half as long as Cu2, with many branches; A2 unconspicuous.
Specimen examined. CNU-NN99033. Only the hind wing preserved.
Occurrence. Jiulongshan Formation, the Middle Jurassic, Daohugou Village, Shantou Township, Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia, China.
Comments. The specimen is a hind wing, which presents some particular traits: the narrow wing versus broad in P. septemaculatus; the position of MP fork close to the MA diverge from the Rs versus the position beyond the MA diverge from Rs; Cu2 with simple distal fork versus Cu2 with distal pectinated branches. However it is distinctly unsuited to compare a forewing with another hind wing, so we have not formally described the specimen as a new species until the further specimens can be found.
