Synthesis and Mass Spectra of Substituted Phenylethylamines and their Schiff Bases

Substituted phenylethylamine (4 —10) and their Schiff bases (11-17) have been synthesised. A comparative study of the positive and negative ion mass spectra of 4 —10 and 11 —17 has been made. The results have shown that positive ion chemical ionisation is more diagnostic for the identification of 4 —10 whereas positive ion electron impact is preferable for 11-17. The fragmentation modes of these com­pounds have been established with the help of exact mass measurements and metastable ion data.
