Description

Bambusiphaga yangi sp. nov.

(Figs 11–22)

Description. Body length (from apex of vertex to tip of forewings): male 3.40–3.50 (N = 7); female 4.00– 4.20 mm (N = 8); forewing length: male 2.80–2.90 (N = 7); female 3.30–3.40 mm (N = 8).

Coloration. General color reddish orange or pale yellow, with blackish brown markings. Head and thorax (Fig. 11) reddish orange except tegulae and two oval markings on scutellum blackish brown. Ocelli reddish brown, eyes brown to blackish brown. Forewings pale yellowish orange, venations dark yellowish orange. Abdomen with dorsal areas of 5th to 8th segments dark brown, pygofer yellowish white or yellowish brown, anal segment and anal style dark brown, genital styles (Fig. 18) blackish brown.

Head and thorax. Vertex shorter in middle line than wide at base (0.88:1), width at apex narrower than at base (0.88:1), anterior margin broadly rounded, carinae distinct. Frons 1.64 times longer in middle line than widest part, 0.84 time narrower at base than at apex. Base of postclypeus wider than apex of frons. Antennae with basal segment with length subequal to width, shorter than second segment (0.32:1). Pronotum slightly shorter than vertex (0.90:1). Mesonotum 1.50 times as long as vertex and pronotum together in middle line. Forewings (Fig. 13) longer in middle line than broad at widest part (3.00:1), transverse venation located in middle near apex. Hindwings (Fig. 14) narrow and long, longer in middle line than broad at widest part (2.51:1).

Male genitalia. Anal segment (Fig. 15) short, ring-like, ventral margin without process. Pygofer in profile (Figs 16, 17) with dorsal margin subequal to ventral margin, laterodorsally angularly produced, posterior margin sinuate; in posterior view (Figs 18, 19), with opening longer than wide, ventral margin broadly concave, with a spine-like medioventral process. Aedeagus in profile (Fig. 22) with basal half broad, laterally compressed, apical half tubular, strongly curved ventrally, with three inversed spine-like processes subapically, two on left side, one on right side; gonopore at apex, node-like. Genital styles in posterior view (Figs 18, 20) slender, reaching to ventral margin of anal segment, narrow at middle, widened subapically, acute at apex, inner margin with a finger-like process, directed dorsad, caudal margin with an inversed finger-like process; genital styles in profile (Figs 16, 21) straight, slightly narrow in middle, apex forked, caudal margin with an inversed finger-like process.

Type material. Holotype 3, China: Yunnan, Ruili, Moli (97°50´N, 24°00´E), 770 m, collected from bamboo, 15 June 2009 (Z.-H. Yang) (IEGU).

Paratypes: China: 63, 7ƤƤ, same data as holotype; 1Ƥ, Yunnan, Yingjiang, Tongbi (97°56´N, 24°41´E), 270 m, collected from bamboo, 13 June 2009 (Z.-H. Yang) (all in IEGU).

Host plant. Bamboo.

Distribution. Southwest China (Yunnan).

Remarks. This new species is very closely related to B. luodianensis Ding, 1982 but differs in the aedeagus with three inversed spine-like processes subapically (aedeagus without processes subapically in luodianensis); the apex of genital styles with an inversed finger-like process at caudal margin (apex of genital styles with a tooth-like process at caudal margin in luodianensis); and the medioventral process of pygofer shorter and straight (medioventral process of pygofer longer and curved right apically in luodianensis).

Based on characters of male genitalia, this species belongs to the nigropunctata group.

Etymology. This species is named in honour of the collector of the type specimens, Dr. Zai-Hua Yang.
