Syrphoctonus haemorrhoidalis Szepligeti 1898, syn. nov.

Authors/Creators

Description

Syrphoctonus haemorrhoidalis (Szépligeti, 1898) = Syrphoctonus lipothrix (Momoi, 1973) syn. nov.

Momoi described this species based on three males and one female from the same location (Table 1); I here designate one of the males as lectotype. Comparing the species with the holotype of Syrphoctonus haemorrhoidalis, I found them to be conspecific, and Momoi’s species thus becomes a junior synonym of S. haemorrhoidalis (syn. nov.).

Type material. Lectotype: Mongolia - Bajan-Ölgij aimak, in the valley of the river Chavea lyn gol, 25 km E from Somon Cagannuur, 1850 m, 3.07.1968. Labelling of the lectotype: MONGOLIA: Bajan-Ölgij aimak; im Tal des Flusses Chavea-; lyn gol, 25 km O von Somon; Cagannuur, 1850 m; Exp.Dr.Z.KASZAB,1968 // Nr.1056; 3.VII.1968 // Homotropus; lipothrix; Det.S. MOMOI, // Lectotypus; Homotropus ɗ; lipothrix Momoi; label: S.Klopfstein 0 6 // Syrphoctonus ɗ; haemorrhoidalis (Sz); det. S.Klopfstein 2006. Paralectotypes: 1Ψ and 2ɗ from the same locality (all HNHM).

Diagnosis. S. haemorrhoidalis can easily be distinguished from all other species of the genus by the mainly red mesosternum, mesopleuron and metapleuron. An interesting character found in the female is the absence of multiporous plate sensillae on the ventral surface of the apical flagellomeres, a character which shows its proximity to the Holarctic S. crassicrus (Thomson, 1890). It belongs to the pictus species-group as described by Dasch (1964a).
