Griphophanes simplex sp. nov.

Material examined. SRI LANKA. HOLOTYPE 3: “ Ceylon, Prov. of Uva, Yalakumbura, Alt. 1300 ft, 5 mls SSW Bibile, 13.III.62, Loc. 140”; “Ravine with small stream” (ZMLU). PARATYPE: 1 3, “ Ceylon, Centr. Prov., Stream, 20 mls E Kandy, 12.III.62, Loc. 135”; “Swept above surface of small stream” (ZMLU).
Diagnosis. Ac biseriate; trochanters and tibiae yellow; halter yellow; fore basitarsus simple.
Description. Male: Length (holotype): body 1.9 mm, wing 2.1 mm. Head: Frons and face velvet black, with brownish pruinosity; eyes converging below antennae and almost contiguous; palpus black with spine-like apical seta; antenna dark brown, first flagellomere triangular, as long as high; lower postoculars black. Thorax: Mesonotum and scutellum dark metallic green, with brownish pruinosity; 6 dc, anteriormost distinctly smaller; ac biseriate; scutellum with 2 strong marginal setae and 2 smaller lateral setae; pleura dark brown shining. Legs: Dark brown, but trochanters, tibiae and basitarsi yellow. Fore leg: coxa with black setae; femur with 3–4 long pv setae on basal half; tibia with small ad seta at 1/3, ventral row of short erect setae on entire length, and strong pd seta before apex; tarsomeres simple; relative podomere ratios: 53, 51, 23/10/9 /6/7. Mid leg: coxa with some strong anterior setae; femur with 1 strong anterior preapical seta; tibia with strong and long ad seta at 1/4, 2 smaller pd setae at 1/5 and 2/3, and 3 strong apical setae; relative podomere ratios: 66, 72, 29/ 17/13/10 /9. Hind leg: coxa with 1 strong lateral seta; femur with strong anterior preapical seta, and 3–4 strong av setae on distal third; tibia with 1 ad/pd setal pair at 1/5, 1 pd at 1/2, 1 strong erect dorsoapical seta, and 2 apical setae, relative podomere ratios: 75, 80, 20/22/ 18/13/10. Wing: Hyaline; R4+5 and M parallel; CuAx ratio: 0.66; RMx ratio: 1.4; lower calypter dark brown with fan of dark brown setae; halter yellow. Abdomen: Dark metallic green, with brownish pruinosity, segments 6 to 8 dark brown; hypopygium including cercus dark brown. Hypopygium (Figs. 4 A–B): hypandrium strongly broadened apically; epandrial lobe with strong and long, flattened and curved apical seta, and smaller subapical seta; ventral lobe of surstylus narrow, bearing long seta; dorsal lobe of surstylus tapering apically, with several small setulae; postgonite narrow, with strong dorsal and ventral seta; cercus small and rounded. Female: Unknown.
Etymology. The name refers to the simple unmodified fore basitarsus.
