Speocarcinus monotuberculatus Felder & Rabalais 1986

Description

Speocarcinus monotuberculatus Felder & Rabalais, 1986

(Figs. 2 G)

Speocarcinus monotuberculatus Felder & Rabalais, 1986: 561.

Speocarcinus monotuberculatus— Ng et al. 2008: 201; Thoma et al. 2009: 559; Brandão et al. 2010: 137; Lai et al. 2011: 442.

Material examined. Holotype, female cl 6 mm, cw 7.8 mm (USNM 228459), Texas, Gulf of Mexico, Southern Bank, 27°33'02”N – 96°29'03”W, 6.vii. 1976, 76 m; Hospital Rock, 27°26'49”N – 96°31'18”W, 1977, 81 m: 1 juv. male, 1 female paratypes (USNM 228460) [judging from the labels, the locality and depth of the holotype and paratypes were switched in the original description].

Type locality. Texas, Gulf of Mexico, Southern Bank, 27°33'02”N – 96°29'03”W, 76 m.

Description. See Felder & Rabalais (1986).

Remarks. The G1 has never been documented in S. monotuberculatus, as the abdomen is lacking in the only known male specimen of this species (the juvenile USNM 228460). Otherwise, S. monotuberculatus was described and illustrated in great detail by Felder and Rabalais (1986). The species can be readily distinguished from all other species in the genus by having one dorsal median tubercle on both male and female abdominal segment 2.

Distribution. Texas, Gulf of Mexico, in soft bottoms between 76 and 81 m.
