Description

Cleotomiris miyamotoi new species

(Figs. 3, 4, 5 A, 6, 8)

Cleotomiris schneirlai: Yasunaga, 2001: 146 (diag.) [nec Schuh, 1984].

Diagnosis. Recognized by the small body, weakly terete antenna, comparatively shiny pronotum and scutellum, small ostiolar peritreme, smooth male genital segment lacking the ventral spine, and very shot apical spine of the endosoma. This new species was incorrectly identified by Yasunaga (2001) as C. schneirlai Schuh, an assumed closest congener, from which C. miyamotoi can be distinguished by the smaller size, weakly terete antennal segments II–IV, narrower evaporative area of the ostiolar peritreme, short, blunt-tipped hypophysis of the left paramere, and very short spine of the endosoma.

Description. Body small; basic coloration chestnut brown; dorsal surface with sparsely distributed, silky, semierect setae, and with more sparsely distributed, upright long setae on scutellum and hemelytron. Head shining; basal margin of vertex narrowly carinate. Antenna yellowish brown, weakly terete; segments III and IV darker. Labium shiny chestnut brown, reaching apex of mesocoxa. Pronotum weakly roughened; collar distinct, about as thick as base of antennal segment II; pleura somewhat shagreened; ventral half of evaporative area creamy white. Hemelytron with a white, claval fascia just posterior to scutellum; apical 1/3 of clavus and subapical part of corium pruinosed; membrane almost entirely smoky brown. Coxae and legs castaneous, except for whitish meso- and metacoxae; tarsomeres I and II pale brown. Abdomen entirely shiny dark brown. Male genitalia (Fig. 6): Genital segment smooth, lacking ventral spine. Parameres small; left paramere with short, blunt-tipped hypophysis. Phallotheca weakly C-shaped. Apical spine of endosoma very short. Female genitalia: Not examined.

Measurements. 3/Ƥ: Total body length 3.0/ 2.7–3.0; length from apex of clypeus to cuneal fracture 2.08/ 2.00–2.20; head width across eyes 0.66/ 0.57–0.63; vertex width 0.27/ 0.30–0.32; lengths of antennal segment I–IV 0.23, 0.90, 0.50, 0.36/ 0.21–0.22, 0.76–0.77, 0.43–0.47, 0.33–0.39; labial length 0.96/ 0.91–0.96; mesal pronotal length 0.66/ 0.60–0.62; basal pronotal width 0.86/ 0.76–0.84; width across hemelytron 0.90/ 0.90–1.02; and lengths of metafemur, tibia and tarsus 0.90, 1.34, 0.27/ 0.90–0.95, 1.26–1.32, 0.27–0.29.

Etymology. Named in honor of the late Dr Syôiti Miyamoto (1913−2010), one of the most eminent heteropterists in Japan.

Distribution. Japan (the Ryukyus: Okinawa Island).

Biology. Unknown.

Holotype: 3, JAPAN: Ryukyus: Okinawa Island, Kunigami, Yona, light trap, 20–25 May 1993, T. Yasunaga (AMNH _PBI 00379515) (SUT).

Paratypes. JAPAN: 1Ƥ, same data as for holotype (00379517) (TYCN); 1Ƥ, same data, except for date 24 Jun 1999 (00379516) (TYCN).
