Protohermes changninganus

Description

Protohermes changninganus species group

Diagnosis. Body medium-sized (male wingspan 80–90 mm). Head yellow, immaculate or with black markings on vertex, postocular spine indistinct or absent. Lateral ocelli slightly separated from median ocellus with distance between them shorter than distance between antennal bases. Wings hyaline, pale grayish to smoky brown, with whitish or yellowish markings. Male ninth sternum medially inflated, posteriorly with a pair of digitiform or subtriangular lobes; ectoproct bifurcated proximally into band-like dorsal and subtriangular ventral lobes; tenth gonocoxite with a pair of ventromedial processes. Female ninth abdominal segment laterally with a pair of ovoid lobes.

Remarks. This species group appears to be most closely related to the P. assamensis group (Liu et al. 2007) in having similar genitalia, a bilobed male ectoproct and ovoid lateral lobes on the female ninth abdominal segment. However, in the P. changninganus group the dorsal lobe of male ectoproct is elongate and band-like, whereas in the P. assamensis group it is short and valvate (Liu et al. 2007a).
