Apsilocera fulvipennis Mitroiu

Description

Apsilocera fulvipennis Mitroiu & van Achterberg, sp. n.

(Figs 7, 25, 33)

Type material. Holotype, ♀ (RMNH), “ MALAYSIA: SE Sabah, nr DanumValley Field C., c. 150 m, WONO, Mal. trap 5, 5.xii.1987– 20.i.1988, RMNH, C.v.Achterberg & T. Burghouts”. Paratype (1 ♀, RMNH): “S. VIETNAM: Dông Nai, Cát Tiên N.P., c. 100 m, 19–25.iv.2007, Mal. traps, Dong trail, Mai Phu Quy & Nguyen Thanh Manh, RMNH’07”.

Diagnosis. Head slightly transverse in anterior view, with one crest between each eye and corresponding torulus; clypeal margin with one small blunt tooth (Fig. 25); each funicular segment with one row of sensilla; clava pale yellow (Fig. 7); distal tooth of mandible blunt (Fig. 25). Mesosoma arched; fore coxa mainly dark, mid and hind coxae pale yellow, the latter with a small dark spot basally; fore wing with large brownish cloud below marginal vein (Figs. 7, 33). Metasoma dorsally brown except small pale basal depression.

Description. Holotype female, body length: 1.75 mm. Colour (Fig. 7): head dark green, the metallic reflections more conspicuous in anterior part of head; eyes reddish, ocelli whitish; scape light brown, whitish basally; pedicel light brown; flagellum brown except clava pale yellow; mandible light brown, teeth darker. Mesosoma very dark olive green; fore coxa mainly dark, mid and hind coxae pale yellow, the latter with a small dark spot basally; trochanters pale yellow; femora brown except pale proximal end; tibiae and tarsi brown; fore wing with large brownish cloud below marginal vein that does not extend to hind margin of wing; hind wing hyaline; tegula and venation brown. Metasoma dorsally brown except small pale basal depression; ovipositor sheaths darker.

Head slightly transverse in anterior view, with one crest between each eye and corresponding torulus; antenna inserted very high, almost on vertex; vertex not high, almost flat between posterior ocelli; gena moderately receding towards mouth, not hollowed at mouth corner (Fig. 25); temple virtually absent; occiput slightly emarginate; clypeal margin with one blunt tooth (Fig. 25); each funicular segment with one row of sparse sensilla; clava pale yellow (Fig. 7); mandible formula 4:4, distal tooth blunt (Fig. 25). Relative measurements—length: 20; width: 43; height: 35; POL: 11.5; OOL: 8; eye height: 20; eye length: 15; malar space: 7.5; mouth width: 20; distance between clypeal margin and toruli: 27; scape length: 25; pedicel length: 5; pedicel width: 3; pedicel plus flagellum: 57; F1 length: 6; F1 width: 4; F6 length: 5.5; F6 width: 3.5; clava length: 13; clava width: 4.

Mesosoma arched (Fig. 7); suture between mesoscutum and scutellum deep; propodeum finely reticulate, alveoli very small; fore wing with basal cell bare, open below; basal vein pilose; ventral side of costal cell with one row of hairs, in distal part with a patch of hairs; speculum reaching parastigma; stigma slightly elongated (Fig. 33). Relative measurements—length: 39; width: 33; height: 29; mesoscutum length: 16; scutellum length: 14; scutellum width: 18; propodeum median length: 6; fore wing length: 100; fore wing width: 42; M: 22; S: 10; P: 22.

Metasoma short ovate (Fig. 7); dorsal side of first tergite with a small shallow depression at base; exerted part of ovipositor sheaths hardly seen in dorsal view. Relative measurements—length: 50; width: 39; length of first tergite: 20; distance from base of metasoma to tip of hypopygium: 30.

Variability. In the female paratype the gaster is narrower (but also more collapsed than in holotype) and the tip of hypopygium is closer to base of the metasoma.

Distribution. Vietnam, Malaysia.

Hosts. Unknown.

Etymology. The name is derived from the Latin words “ fulvus ” (brown) and “ penna ” (wing), and refers to the large brown spot on the fore wing.

Comments. Apsilocera fulvipennis belongs to a group of species having conspicuous crests on the vertex, but it is very distinct due to the large brown cloud on the forewing, which is not present in any other species in the region (Figs 7, 33).
