Etymology. In reference to Buffon Island group, including the type locality, Latinized adjective.

Description. Shell (Fig. 3 B; 4B-C). Variable in diameter and elevation, shape broadly conical. Whorls with slightly angulate periphery, moderately shouldered underneath suture. Axial ribs weak. Colour brownish-horn to light brown.

Genitalia (Fig. 6 B). Penial length equivalent to about ¾ of anterior part of oviduct (= vagina and free oviduct). Inner penial wall with symmetrical sculpture, posteriorly with two longitudinal pilasters converging distally and towards wall centre into smooth pad, anteriorly with longitudinal folds extending into atrium. Vaginal length aboutone third of length of penis and free oviduct. Spermoviduct about 1.5 times longer than free oviduct and about ¾ of length of albumen gland.

Remarks. Shell colour darker than A. pallida and lighter than other congeners. On average shell smaller, flatter and with fewer whorls than other congeners except A. nana. Sculpture similar to other congeners but finer than in A. augustae, A. crassicostata, A. nana, A. rotunda and A. sanctumpatriciusae. Inner penial wall sculpture similar to that of A. nana and A. pallida but with smooth pads. This is Solem’s (1991) manuscript species ‘NSP 77’.
