Description

Ptychoptera bannaensis sp. nov.

(Figs. 1–6)

Diagnosis. Wing marked with two narrow bands. Posterior projection of epandrium particularly long, each projection tapering medially, suddenly coarsening and curved distally; gonostylus long and slender; hypandrium with two patches of long dense hairs.

Description. Male. Body length 7.0 mm, wing length 7.5 mm. Head mostly dark brown, except frons and cheeks yellow; head mostly with black hairs, except frons and cheeks with yellow hairs. Compound eyes black without pubescence. Antenna with scape, pedicel and basal 2/3 of first flagellomere yellow, other flagellomeres dark brown; hairs on antenna black. Proboscis mostly yellow with black hairs. Palpus yellow with black hairs.

Thoracic dorsum uniformly black; scutellum with a patch of dense black hairs at middle; mesopleuron yellow without hairs. Coxae and trochanters yellow; femora mostly yellow, except apical margin dark brown; tibiae mostly yellow brown, except apical margin dark brown; first tarsomere yellow brown at base, gradually darkened apically, other tarsomeres dark brown; hairs on legs black. Relative length of 1st to 5th tarsomeres in hindleg as 10.5: 2.2: 1.5: 1: 1. Wing (Fig. 2) 3.6 times as long as wide, subhyaline; wing marked with two narrow bands as follows: median band extending from basal of Rs to middle section of CuA; subapical band broadest along anterior margin of wing, covering pterostigma, and extending to tip of M2; veins brown; venation: Sc ending in C not at level of basal 1/3 of R2+3; Rs short, about 1/2 as long as r-m. Haltere yellow with brown hairs. Prehaltere yellow.

Abdominal terga mostly yellow, except posterior margins of 1st to 4th terga dark brown. Sterna uniformly yellow. Hairs on abdomen brown. Male genitalia (Figs. 3–6): Epandrium with a pair of posterior projections, each projection broadest at base, tapering medially, suddenly coarsening and curved distally, with black hairs. Hypandrium broad basally when viewed ventrally, concave medially, apical part with three pairs of projections; basal part with a pair of broad projections, round, with two patches of dense long hairs basally; medial part with a pair of finger-like projections short, bare; apical part with broad, round projections, each with a trapezoid projection, with several long hairs apically. Gonocoxite swollen ventrally. Gonostylus broad at base, with a fingerlike projection, tapered apically, with dense hairs; medial part with a finger-like projection dorsally, an elliptic projection ventrally; gonostylus narrowed, round at apex. Paramere slender, J-like.

Female. Unknown.

Type material. HOLOTYPE: 3, CHINA, Yunnan, Banna, Menglun, 2007. IV. 24, Wenliang Li. PARATYPE: 13, CHINA, Yunnan, Banna, Menglun, 630 m, 2009. VI. 6, Guoquan Wang.

Distribution. China (Yunnan).

Etymology. The specific name refers to the type locality Banna.

Remarks. This new species is very special and distinctly different from the known species in China in the following points: wings with only two inerratic bands; gonostylus distinctly long; hypandrium with two patches of long dense hairs basally. In other species, these characteristics have not been observed.
