Assara Walker, 1863, List. Spec. Lepid. Ins. Coll. Brit. Mus. 27: 79. TS: Assara albicostalis Walker, 1863. Cateremna Meyrick, 1882, Proc. Linn. Soc. N. S. W. 7: 156. TS: Euzophera microdoxa Meyrick, 1879.
Diagnosis. The genus Assara is similar to Euzophera Zeller, 1867, but can be distinguished by the following characters: the gnathos slim, distally hooked; transtilla with terminal margin concave or quadrate; juxta with gradually sharpened lateral lobes. In Euzophera, the gnathos is usually pointed and longer than uncus; the terminal margin of transtilla is bifid; the lateral lobes of juxta are enlarged distally.
Adult. Wingspan 11–24 mm. Frons rounded, covered with smooth scales. Chaetosema and ocellus present. Labial palpus upturned, reaching or over vertex; proboscis well-developed, scaled at base. Antenna filiform, about 2/3 length of forewing. Forewing with 11 veins, R3 and R4 with basal 2/3 stalked; R2 from lower angle of discal cell; M1 from 1/3 of upper angle of discal cell, M2 approximated to M3 at base; CuA1, CuA2 from lower angle of discal cell. Hindwing with 9 veins, Sc and Rs stalked, M1 stalked with Rs shortly at base; M2 and M3 fused completely; M2+3 and CuA1 stalked at base; CuA2 from 3/4 of discal cell, discal cell about 1/2 length of hindwing.
Male genitalia. Uncus triangular, with rounded or narrow apex, dorsal part with hairs; apical process of gnathos elongated, hooked; valva with basal part narrower than distal part or with dorsal and ventral margins parallel, apex rounded; costa sclerotized, with small projection at apex; juxta V-shaped, with setae at tip; vinculum U-shaped; aedeagus cylindrical or rod-shaped.
Female genitalia. Papillae anales slim or narrow; apophyses anteriores and apophyses posteriores about equal in length; ductus bursae and corpus bursae membranous, ductus seminalis from base of corpus bursae; signum various in shape.
