Description

Chelonibia patula (Ranzani, 1818)

(Figs 3 d–f).

Material examined. ZUTC-cirri 1142, 1143, 1144, 1145, 1146.

Persian Gulf. New record from the Persian Gulf.

Gulf Oman. New record from the Gulf of Oman.

General distribution and habitat. Tropical Atlantic and Indo-West Pacific; attached to sea turtles and decapod crustaceans (Jones et al. 2000).

Descriptive features and remarks. Shell white, smooth, conical, not high. Orifice oval (Fig. 3 e) or broadly polygonal (Fig. 3 d). Occludent margin of scutum not sinuous. Largest specimen (ZUTC-cirri 1142) with basal diameter 15.57 mm, height 5.92 mm.

The specimens were found attached to the carapace and chelipeds of crabs, e.g. Portunus segnis (Forskål, 1775) (Fig. 3 f) and Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), the carapace of lobsters, cuttlefish shells and plastic objects in Dayyer (27° 49'N, 51° 55'E), Bandar-Lengeh (26° 30'N, 54° 39'E), Minab (26° 48'N, 57° 01'E), and Gwater (25° 08'N, 61° 27'E) (Fig. 1).
