Description

Ypsiloncyphon micans (Klausnitzer, 1973)

(Figs. 110–116)

Cyphon micans Klausnitzer, 1973

(= Cyphon paramicans Klausnitzer, 1979), new synonymy

Type material studied (Papua New Guinea):

C. micans, ♂: “ Holotypus Cyphon micans KLAUSNITZER \ coll. Dr. J. BALOGH et Dr. J. J. SZENT-IVÁNY \ NEW GUINEA Mt. Kaindi, 2400 m, 15.–16.IV.1965 “ (♂ HNHM). “ Paratypus Cyphon micans KLAUSNITZER \ coll. Dr. J. BALOGH et Dr. J. J. SZENT-IVÁNY \ NEW GUINEA Mt: Kaindi, 2400 m, 15.–16.IV.1965 “ (♂ HNHM; BL 2.2 mm). “ Cyphon micans Klausnitzer, 1973 Paratypus ♂\ New Guinea Mt. Kaindi 2400 m 15.–16.IV.1965, ex coll.Balogh et Szent-Ivany, Mus. Budapest” (genitalia slide, coll. Klausnitzer).

C. paramicans, ♂: “ Holotypus Cyphon paramicans KLAUSNITZER 1979 \ NEW GUINEA / NE/, Wau Eddy Creek, 2050 m 30.VIII.1968. \ /No. NG-W.C.13./ leg.Dr.J.Balogh“ (♂ HNHM; BL 2.0 mm). “ Paratypus Cyphon paramicans KLAUSNITZER 1979 \ NEW GUINEA / NE/, Wau, Mt. Kaindi 19.-– 24.VIII.1969 \ /No. NGW-U. 12./ leg. Dr. J. Balogh“ (♂ HNHM; BL 2.1 mm). “ Cyphon paramicans Klausnitzer, 1979 Paratypus ♂/ Neuguinea (NE) Mt. Wilhelm 3900m 13.– 24.9.1968 leg. J. Balogh Nr. NG-M-C 26 ex coll. Mus. Budapest” (genitalia slide, coll. Klausnitzer).

Additional material studied. 1♂: “ NEW GUINEA / NE/ Wau, Mt. Kaindi 24-25.VIII.1968 / /No. NG-W. C.T./ leg Dr. J.Balogh \ Scirtes sp. det Klausnitzer 84”. 1♀(presumed): “ NEW GUINEA / NE/ Lae 4-6.IX.1968 / / No. NG-L-C. 16./ leg Dr. J.Balogh \ Scirtes sp. det Klausnitzer 84” (both HNHM, terminal segments and genitalia had previously been extracted and glued onto the card, now on plastic slide on specimen pin).

Habitus. Elongate oval, presumed female more slender than males. BL 2.0– 2.1mm in males, 2.2mm in the female. Dorsal face black, head of males red, reddish brown in the female, appendages yellowish.

Male. Apodemes of T9 more than twice as long as those of T8 (Figs. 112, 113). Penis (Figs. 110, 114) slender, trigonium conical, apically pointed. Trigonium base corresponding to 70% of maximum penis width. Parameroids slender, straight, little longer than trigonium, apically rounded. Pala narrow, anterior end elongate oval, not much enlarged, pala length corresponds to 40% of penis length. Capulus of S9 short, anteriorly barely enlarged. Blades straight, with gradually narrowing apices, the longer blade about one third to almost one half longer than the other one (Figs. 111, 115).

Female (presumed). Terminal segments in poor condition, dictyon missing. S8 anteriorly forming a simple loop with narrow weak expansion. Vulvar sclerite incompletely visible, composed of a small transverse sclerite bar that laterally bears short forward prolongations (Fig. 116).

Notes. In the original description of Y. micans the closely adjacent tips of the parameroids (Fig. 110) were mistaken for a single entire penis apex. Later, this was regarded as the prime difference from Y. paramicans. The elytra of Y. micans were said to have distinct ridges, and a pilosity producing shining reflections (Latin micans, shining). This remains unexplained because none of the syntypes I have seen exhibits these characters; the holotype of Y. micans no longer has elytra. The original description erroneously gives 2.4–2.5 mm as body length of Y. paramicans.

Fresh material is needed for a complete redescription and to decide on the possible significance of the variation of S9. The genitalia of several historical specimens glued to the specimen cards were recovered and mounted for study. However, in several not all parts are available. The material resisted proper clearing in KOH as well as in lactic acid. Possibly it was originally preserved in formaldehyde.
