Merragata hebroides White 1877

Description

Merragata hebroides White, 1877

Merragata hebroides White, 1877: 114. Syntype (s): ♀, Hawaii Islands, Oahu (BMNH).

Merragata foveata Drake, 1917: 103. Synonymized by Blatchley (1926: 610). Holotype: USA, Ohio, Summit Co., Ira (USNM).

Merragata slossoni Van Duzee, 1921: 133. Synonymized by Drake (1952: 194). Holotype: ♂, USA, Florida, Biscayne Bay (CASC).

Merragata lindbergi Poisson, 1954a: 2. Synonymized by Drake & Chapman (1958: 319, listed) and Drake & Cobben (1960: 36). Syntypes: 2 ♂ 4 ♀, Canary Islands, Tenerife, Puerto de San Juan (MZHF).

Material examined. CANARY ISLANDS: Gran Canaria: Maspalomas, 282-120, sand dunes, water, 3.viii.2003, 3 ♀, M. Mantič lgt. (2 ♀ NMPC, 1 ♀ MMHC).

Distribution. North Africa: Canary Islands (Poisson 1954a, b; Aukema et al. 2013b). Nearctic and Neotropical Region: From southern Canada to Argentina (except Chile), West Indies and Netherland Antilles (Drake 1917, Blatchley 1926, Drake & Chapman 1958, Drake & Cobben 1960, Polhemus & Polhemus 1988). Hawaiian Islands (White 1877).

The distribution in Cape Verde Islands (Drake & Chapman 1958) is an apparent error for Canary Islands, which were not listed by those authors.

Comment. The synonym Merragata lindbergi was described according to 2 male and 4 female syntypes deposited in MZHF. However, in the collection of NMPC there is deposited also one female ‘paratype’ of M. lindbergi (see Kment & Kolínová 2013). Most probably there are the same problems with redundant types as in H. pusillus canariensis (see Comment on p. 15) but we did not receive the detailed information from L. Huldén to be provided here.
