Description
23. Euribia
[Euribia] Meigen, 1800: 36.
CURRENT STATUS: Unavailable name; work suppressed for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]); treated under Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 [teste Norrbom et al. (1999: 241)].
Euribia Latreille, 1802: 458.
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758; Musca umbellatarum Fabricius, 1775 (in Latreille 1802: 458).
TYPE SPECIES: Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758, by subsequent designation (Hendel 1927: 37).
CURRENT STATUS: Senior synonym of Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830. New Synonymy.
FAMILY: TEPHRITIDAE.
REMARKS: Euribia was originally proposed by Meigen (1800: 36) without included species and later made unavailable by the suppression of the entire work for the purposes of zoological nomenclature by action of the I.C.Z.N. (1963: 339 [Opinion 678]). Latreille (1802: 458) was the first subsequent usage of Euribia after Meigen (1800) where Euribia was placed in synonymy with Musca Linnaeus, 1758, sensu lato, and included two species: Musca umbellatarum Fabricius, 1775 and Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758. The name was made available by subsequent usage as valid in Hendel (1908: 64). Coquillett (1910a: 542) designated Musca artemisiae Fabricius, 1794 as type species of Euribia [with Meigen as author], but, although this was one of the four nominal species included by Hendel (1908: 64), it was not one of the two originally included species in Latreille (1802), thus it is an invalid designation. Hendel’s (1927: 37) designation of Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758 is the first valid typification of Euribia. Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758 is currently treated as a species of Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 [teste Norrbom et al. (1999: 241)], which makes Euribia Latreille, 1802 a senior synonym of Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830, n. syn. Since the inclusion of species in Trypeta Meigen (1803) and Meigen’s (1804: xxi) synonymization of Trypeta Meigen, 1803 with Latreille’s (1802: 458) “ caudatae ” [which is the group that Euribia was placed in synonymy with by Latreille (1802)], subsequent works treating the Meigen 1800 names (e.g., Coquillett 1910a; Stone 1941) have synonymized Euribia with Trypeta Meigen, 1803. However, Hendel’s (1927: 37) type designation of Musca cardui Linnaeus, 1758 fixed the generic concept of Euribia as synonymous with Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830. Despite the suppression of Meigen (1800), Euribia has been used as a valid name at least up to 1974 (Lin & Tseng 1974) and more than 60 of the 209 species-group taxa currently listed in Urophora [see Norrbom et al. (1999: 241)] were originally described in Euribia. It is not currently clear, but if a strong case could be made that this change of name would threaten the stability of nomenclature and taxonomy, then an application should be submitted to the ICZN Commission to conserve Urophora Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 over Euribia Latreille, 1802.
