Physomerinus pedator (Sharp, 1883)

Material examined. China: 110 ♂♂, 30 ♀♀, labeled ‘ China: Shanghai, Minhang District (闵行区), 31°01'05"N, 121°27'15"E, mud bank along river, under weeds, rotten wood, sifted, 04./ 10.iv.2014, Hu, Peng, Song & Yin leg.’ (SNUC). Japan (for comparison): 1 ♂, 1 ♀, labeled ‘Riv. Kushidagawa, Matsunase-cho. Matsuzaka City, Mie Pref., 29.iv.2002, Yasuko Kawakami leg.’; 1 ♂, labeled ‘ TSUDA, TOKUSHIMA, 1965 ix-18, M Sakai’; 1 ♂, labeled ‘ ḞMfflāuḛẋ, Èñƌ, äẍḃ, 1997. viii.13, 西田光康採集 ’; 1 ♀, labeled ‘ Daishibashi, Ryokuchi, Tamagawa, Ota-ku, Tokyo, [Hongshu, JAPAN], 4.v.2007, S. Nomura leg.’; 1 ♀, labeled ‘ Japan; Honshu, Momiya Riv., Kuji Cho, Hitachi Shi, Ibaragi Ken, 12.v.2002, KAMEZAWA, Hiromu leg., ḚIJḆƂËƜƙflḃ, ãfifflā 口 ’ (all in NSMT).

Distribution. Japan: Honshu, Shikoku, Kyûshû, Gotô-rettô, Yaku-shima; China: Shanghai (new provincial record), Zhejiang, Hainan.

Comments. Physomerinus pedator (Fig. 1 B) is characterized by the male metafemora possessing a large cavity in which a basally pedunculate and apically expanded projection is situated. The populations from Shanghai and Japan are externally similar (Fig. 3 B–C; Nomura 1991: fig. 133A, 133D), and their aedeagi exhibit only slight variation (Fig. 3 H–I; Nomura 1991: fig. 134A–B). All individuals from Shanghai were collected under weeds or in decaying woods at a mud bank along a river in April (Fig. 4 A, 4C).
