Description of song: The calling song of male Chorthippus loratus male calling song usually consists of synchronized short phrases (Fig. 14 B). The phrase durations vary between 300 and 800 ms, depending on the number of syllables. Syllable numbers vary from 7 to 10 in a phrase (Fig. 14 C). Syllable durations and structures vary according to their location in phrase. The initial 2–3 syllables comprise observable pulses, whereas the remaining syllables do not, because the song reproduction of this species starts with synchronized movement (or via one-leg movement) but continues through unsynchronized movement of both legs (Stumpner & Helversen 1994). The initial 2–3 syllables duration lasts for 80–85 ms, the ending 1–2 syllables for 40–50 ms, and the duration of other syllables varies from 90 to 120 ms (Fig. 14 D).
