Euceropsylla Boselli 1929

Description

Euceropsylla Boselli

(Figs 28, 67, 82)

Diagnosis: Head a little wider than mesonotum; lateral ocelli raised on tubercles; anteorbital lobes present; genal processes 0.3–0.8 times as long as vertex, subparallel sided or divergent, rounded apically and slightly upturned (Fig. 28). Antennae 2.6–5.0 times head width, segments 7 and 8 the longest; terminal setae truncate, one seta about half the other. Forewing obovate; pterostigma narrow, veins bearing short inconspicuous setae; veins M1+2 and Cu1a weakly arched. Meracanthus prominent; metatibia with genual spine and 5–6 grouped apical spurs. Male terminalia with bifid parameres.

Biology and damage: Immatures are free-living and are found on young leaves on the lower leaf surface, excreting waxy secretions (field observation).

Host-plants: Predominantly species of Inga (Fabaceae) (Hodkinson 1989).

Distribution: Neotropical (Hodkinson 1989).

Remarks: Vélez (1973) reported Psylla ingae Tuthill from Colombia. Brown & Hodkinson (1988) transferred the species to Euceropsylla and synonymised it with E. multiplex (Tuthill). This synonymy is questionable and Euceropsylla is in need of revision.

Examined material: Euceropsylla sp. 1: Antioquia: 10 (male, female), Medellín, 6°15’46"N, 75°34’40"W, 1479 m, Apr-1971, Inga sp. (A.
