Paragymnomerus Bluthgen 1938

Description

Genus Paragymnomerus Blüthgen, 1938

Paragymnomerus Blüthgen 1938: 286 (subgenus of “ Hoplomerus (Westwood) Agassiz” [= Odynerus Latreille, 1802]); 1941: 307; 1955: 9–10; 1961: 82–83; Giordani Soika 1970: 35; van der Vecht & Fischer 1972: 7 –8; Kurzenko 1977: 679 –681; 1981: 95; Tobias & Kurzenko 1978: 163; Gusenleitner 1998: 175 –176; 2003: 165; 2010: 1347; 2013a: 65–66; Castro & Dvořák 2009: 298.

Type species: Odynerus spiricornis Spinola, 1808, by original designation.

The genus Paragymnomerus Blüthgen, 1938 includes seven Palaearctic species known from Europe and Western and Central Asia (van der Vecht & Fischer 1972; Kurzenko 1977; Gusenleitner 2013a). Wasps of this genus differ from other related genera of Odynerini (i.e., Gymnomerus Blüthgen, Odynerus Latreille, Paravespa Blüthgen, and Tropidodynerus Blüthgen) in having the acute angle of pronotum at the inferoanterior part of its lateral surface. Representatives of the genus are large and usually brightly colored wasps.

The genus Paragymnomerus comprises ground nesting wasps. Females of P. spiricornis excavate nest burrows at both horizontal and vertical surfaces and surmount nest entrances by turrets; the nests are provisioned with pamphiliid larvae (Giraud 1863; Chrétien 1896; Schulthess 1897; Móczár 1939, 1960, 1962, 1974).

Species included: Paragymnomerus amitinorum Blüthgen, 1952 (Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Iran), P. dusmeti Blüthgen, 1962 (France, Spain), P. excelsus (Kostylev, 1935) (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan), P. mammillatus (Morawitz, 1885) (Iran), P. signaticollis signaticollis (Morawitz, 1888) (Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan), P. signaticollis tauricus (Kostylev, 1940) (Russia, Ukraine, Turkey), P. spiricorniformis (Białynicki-Birula, 1926) (Armenia), P. spiricornis spiricornis (Spinola, 1808) (France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Turkey, Armenia, Iran), P. spiricornis turanicus (Kostylev, 1940) (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan).
