Description

Ariadna lalen new species

Figures 62‒63, 70

Ariadna araucana — Grismado (2008: 347, figs 7A‒C) (only ♂), misidentification).

Type-material. ♂ holotype from Reserva Nacional Los Ruiles, elev. 174m (35°50'02,6"S; 72°30'35,7"W), Cauquenes, Cauquenes Province, VII Región de Maule, Chile, 17.VII.2010, A. Ojanguren et al. leg., deposited in MACN-Ar 29457. Paratypes: 1♂ from Contulmo Natural Monument [38°01'55"S; 73°04'22"W], Purén, Malleco, IX Región de Araucanía, Chile, 11.XII.1984 ‒ 13.II.1985, S. & J. Peck leg. (AMNH); 1♀ 2imm. from Estación Biológica de Hualpén, 10m, Concepción, VIII Región de Bío-Bío, Chile (36°47'51.2"S; 73°09'29.3"W), 15‒16.VII.2010, A. Ojanguren et al. leg. (MACN-Ar 29456); 3♀ 2imm. same data of the last (MACN-Ar 2 9454).

Notes. One male of this species was illustrated by Grismado (2008: 347, figs 7A‒C) as a male of A. araucana. After the examination of this specimen and comparing it with others from the same region of occurence, we assumed that it represents a new species, similar to A. araucana in the habitus and leg macrosetae pattern, but with differences in the male and female genitalia. Grismado (2008: 353) stated that the vial labeled as “ longipes ” from “Pissis”, anteriorly recognized as one of the types of Dysdera longipes Nicolet, 1849 by Ramírez (1989) (MNHNP- AR 9069, anteriorly 4211), possess a female specimen that differs from the ones of the vial from Valdivia, with one male and two females (MNHNP-AR 9067, anteriorly 4133). Because of that, Grismado (2008: 353) designated the specimen from “Pissis” as a non-type Ariadna araucana, one of his new species. Here we identifiy this female specimen as Ariadna lalen n. sp., due to differences from A. araucana in the female genitalia.

Additional material examined. CHILE: VIII Región de Bío-Bío: Concepción Province: Hualpén [36°47'32"S; 73°05'44"W], 1♀, 11.I.1989, M. Ramírez leg. (MACN-Ar 10089); 1♀, E. Maury leg. (MACN-Ar 21348); Estação Ecológica Hualpén, 10m (36°47'51,2"S; 73°09'29,3"W), 1♀, 15‒16.VII.2010, A. Ojanguren et al. leg. (MACN-Ar 29462); " Pissis ", 1♀ (MNHNP-AR 9069); IX Región de Araucanía: Malleco Province: Monumento Natural Contulmo (38°00'46.8"S; 73°11'15"W), 2♀ 1imm., 19‒21.XII.1998, M. Ramírez et al. leg. (MACN-Ar 10094); 1♂, 10‒11.II.2005, M. Ramírez & F. Labarque leg. (MACN-Ar 10918).

Diagnosis. Ariadna lalen n. sp. is similar to A. araucana due to the presence of reduced mid-portion in the male palp, and females with leg formula II-I-IV-III and absence of the median membranous crack in the interpulmonary fold; males of Ariadna lalen n. sp. differ from those of A. araucana by the presence of a subrectangular bulb, less rounded than A. araucana, with mid-portion and embolus markedly bended and thickened (Fig. 63A‒B); females of A. lalen n. sp. differ from A. araucana by the anterior receptaculum, flattened laterally, with the dorsal region incrassated and rounded (Fig. 63C‒D).

Etymology. The specific name is a noun in apposition taken from the “Mapundungun”, the language spoken by the Mapuche people that live in Araucanía, and other regions of southern Chile and Argentina. It refers to the old legend of the Lalén Kuzé, la “Araña Vieja” (“ancient spider”), a mythological creature that appears to the Mapuche women in their dreams to teach the art of weaving.
