Epitarsipus rufithorax Le Cerf 1922

Description

Epitarsipus rufithorax Le Cerf, 1922 comb. rev.

Figs 17–19

Lectotype: ♀, Madagascar, Brickaville [Ampasimanolotra], 1917 (MNHN).

Additional material examined: 1♂, 1♀, Madagascar, Reg. sud de l'Ile, Bekily, Sept. [19]33 (MNHN); 1♀, S/W Madagascar, 27km N Tollara, 7m, dry forest near Ifaty, 9.- 13.11.2003, leg. Oelke (SMNS).

Epitarsipus rufithorax was described on the basis of a male and a female from Brickaville [Ampasimanolotra] (Le Cerf 1922). Viette (1982) designated the male as the lectotype and the female as a paralectotype. He concluded that the female, which is considerably different, belonged to another species, M. biedermanni (see M. rufescens below). This conclusion was based on the examination of a short series of both sexes of E. rufithorax from “Reg. sud de l'Ile, Bekily” collected in Sept. 1933, which clearly showed that there is no relevant dimorphism between the sexes.
