The title reaction is found to be first order in [DPN] (DPN, diperiodatonickelate(IV)) and fractional order both in [DMA] (DMA, diamethylamine) and [0H-]. Periodate causes retradation. Effects of added products, Jomc strength, dielectric constant and temperature on the oxidation kientics have been studied. MPN (monoperiodatonickelate(IV)) was found to be the active form of oxidant. A tentative mechanism with complex formation between MPN and DMA followed by the decomposition into products is proposed. The rate law which follows from the mechanism is derived.
