Artemisia rupestris Linnaeus 1753

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Artemisia rupestris Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 847. 1753.

"Habitat in Sibiria, Oelandiae rupibus calcareis." RCN: 6135.

Lectotype (Ling in Jarvis & Turland in Taxon 47: 354. 1998): Herb. Linn. No. 988.25 (LINN).

Current name: Artemisia rupestris L. (Asteraceae).

Note: Stearn (in Biol. J. Linn. Soc. 5: 9. 1973), in an account of Linnaeus’ Öland and Gotland journey of 1741, treated Stora Karlsö off Gotland as the restricted type locality, and noted the existence of 988.25 (LINN). In his paper, he attributed restricted type localities irrespective of whether any material existed in LINN and, where specimens do exist, he does not refer to any of them as type specimens. Leonova (in Novosti Sist. Vyssh. Rast. 24: 186. 1987) indicated unspecified material in LINN as “Typus” but this does not distinguish between the four sheets (which are not part of a single gathering) associated with this name. Ling’s subsequent explicit type choice of 988.25 (LINN), accepted here, shows no annotation expressly associating it with Gotland.
