Synthesis and study of new mesogenic homologous series 4-( 4' -n-alkoxy benzoyloxy)naphthyl azo benzenes

Mesogenic homologous series : 4-(4'-n-alkoxy benzoyloxy)-naphthyl azo benzenes has been synthesized and their mesogenic properties are studied. All the derivatives exhibit enantiotropic nematic mesophase from very first member of the series. Smectic mesophase does not occur by any derivative of the series. Well known odd-even effect is observed in the nematic isotropic transition curve with alternation of transition temperatures. The behaviour of the series and its average thermal stabilities are compared with structurally related series.
