Global financial institutions have come a long way since their inception in the 1930s and 1940s to a diversified and adaptive structure in the early 21st century. The article notes the key role of financial institutions in economic and financial systems, financial markets and financial services markets at the global, international, national, regional and local levels and their significant difference from enterprises, which allows justifying their place in these systems and markets at appropriate levels. their functioning, as well as the characteristics of such institutions. At the same time, the author draws attention to the significant specifics of the formation and functioning of global financial institutions, which play a major role in economic and financial systems, financial markets and financial services markets globally, internationally and nationally, assuming regulatory and regulatory functions. The processes of globalization, development and transformation of the world economy determine the leading of global financial institutions. Today, global financial institutions act as regulators and form the regulatory framework for the functioning of economic and financial systems, financial markets and financial services markets at the global, international and national levels. There are a significant role of global financial institutions in supporting the development and transformation of economies in general and their individual segments, as well as business units in developing countries. An important aspect in the theoretical characterization of financial institutions is the disclosure of their classification. The vast majority of modern global financial institutions form an organizational structure and governance structure based on the practice of organization and management, the so-called Bretton Woods Institutes (IMF and World Bank Group), which requires detailed critical study.
