Description
Harpyrhynchoides setophaga sp. nov.
(Fig. 3)
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Palp femoragenu with weak lateral notches. Palpalae l”G and dF subequal in length. Body, including gnathosoma, 380–420 long. Setae h2 80–100 long. Vulva without long lateral folds. Genua I and II with 4 setae (v ” present). Apical segment of legs III with 5 setae, apical segment of legs IV with 4 setae.
Description. FEMALE (holotype). Body, including gnathosoma, 380 long (400–420 in 3 paratypes) and 340 wide (320–340). Gnathosoma 100 long (90–100) and 95 wide (85–95). Palps 50 long (45–50) and about 40 wide, with weak lateral notches. Palpalae dF and dG with 7–8 tines, subequal in length to l”G, 30–35 long. Setae vF about 60 long. Subcapitulum ventrally with 2–3 pairs of small membranous projections. Peritremal branch about 40 long. Idiosoma 320 long (300–320). Dorsal shield 160 long (150–160) and 240 wide (220–240). Vulva without long lateral folds. All dorsal setae slightly serrate. Ventral setae and setae h2 smooth. Lengths of setae: vi 150 (130–150), ve 120 (110–120), si 145 (140–145), se 170 (155–170), c2 150 (140–150), h2 80 (80–100). Genua I and II with 4 setae (d, l’, v’, v”). Apical segment of legs III with 5 setae, apical segment of legs IV with 4 setae.
Type material. Holotype female (ZISP H-T- 9; ZISP AVB 14-0725-001) and 3 female paratypes (ZISP AVB 14-0725-001, #1-3) from Setophaga ruticilla (Linnaeus) (Passeriformes: Parulidae), CANADA: Winnipeg, Manitoba, 16 May 2000, coll. T.D. Galloway (SM 370).
Type deposition. ZISP.
Hosts and distribution. This species is known only from the type host, Setophaga ruticilla (Parulidae) from North America (present paper; see Table 1).
Etymology. The species name is derived from the generic name of the host and is a noun in apposition.
Differential diagnosis. Among species with four setae on genua I and II, this new species is close to H. rubeculinus. In females of both these species, the apical segments of legs III and IV bear five and four setae, respectively. They differ by the following features. In H. setophaga, the palp femoragenu has weak lateral notches, palpalae l”G and dF are subequal in length, setae h2 are 80–100 long. In females of H. rubeculinus, the palp femoragenu is devoid of lateral notches, palpalae l”G are at least twice as long as dF, and setae h2 are 100–130 long.
