Ctenochauliodes nigrovenosus

Description

Ctenochauliodes nigrovenosus (van der Weele)

(Figures 2–4, 11–12)

Chauliodes nigrovenosus van der Weele, 1907: 257. Type locality: Vietnam (Mauson Mountains). Ctenochauliodes forcipatus Kimmins, 1954: 429. Type locality: China (Jinfoshan).

Ctenochauliodes friedrichi Navás, 1932: 151. Type locality: China (Jinfoshan). syn. nov.

Diagnosis. The forewings of this species possess transverse band-like dark patterns on the distal half. The male tenth tergum is twisted on apex, which is subtriangular and slightly flattened. Male tenth gonocoxite comprises a pair of bluntly tapered lobes, which is nearly equal in length with the right lobe subtriangular. Lateral lobes beneath anus well developed, tuberculate.

Description. Male. See description of C. friedrichi made by Liu & Yang (2006b).

Female. Appearance and genitalic characters of lectotype almost conform to description of C. friedrichi in Liu and Yang (2006b). However, markings on forewings are much darker than those in lectotype and paralectotype of C. friedrichi.

Eighth gonocoxites (Figs 11–12) nearly trapezoidal, posteriorly broadened in lateral view; in ventral view longitudinally separated into a pair of lobes, medially concaved. Tenth tergum short, bearing large cercus, posteriorly leaving a narrow and obtuse tip. Ninth gonocoxite subtriangular, acutely produced posteriad.

Distribution. China (Chongqing, Hubei, Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan, Yunnan); Vietnam (Lang Son, Lao Cai, Vinh Phu) (Yang & Liu 2010).

Remarks. This species was originally described based on only two female specimens from Vietnam and subsequently designated as the type species of the genus Ctenochauliodes (van der Weele 1907, 1909). Liu and Yang (2006b) redescribed this species according to several specimens from China, but the types of C. nigrovenosus were not examined by us at that time. Recently, we gained access to the type specimens of C. nigrovenosus and found that our previous concept of C. nigrovenosus was incorrect. The forewings in the types of C. nigrovenosus possess several narrow, transverse band-like brownish markings, while in the Chinese specimens identified as C. nigrovenosus by Liu and Yang (2006b) the brownish markings occur as rather small, punctuate, and densely dispersed spots on the forewings. Therefore, the identity of C. nigrovenosus should be clarified again. Herein, we consider this species to be conspecific with C. friedrichi by virtue of the similar wing patterns, the same female genitalia, and their occurrence in northern Vietnam. Subsequently, C. friedrichi is treated as a junior synonym of C. nigrovenosus.

Besides the clarification on the identity of C. nigrovenosus, additional notes on the type specimens of this species are given here. The type series of C. nigrovenosus include only two female specimens, which were mentioned to be deposited in the Berlin Museum (MFN) by van der Weele (1907). Ohl and Oswald (2004) listed two type specimens of C. nigrovensosus in MFN (only one specimen bears the van der Weele’s handwritten type label), but they did not designate the lectotype. Surprisingly, in RMNH we found another female specimen identified as C. nigrovenosus, which bears the same collecting label with those of the types in MFN, and also bears a label as “Mus. Berol.” and a handwritten identification label as “ Chauliodes nigrovenosus Type Ƥ v.d.W.”. Therefore, it is very likely that one of the two types of C. nigrovenosus was moved from MFN to RMNH. Thus, the female specimen in MFN without the van der Weele’s handwritten type label was misinterpreted as a type specimen by Ohl and Oswald (2004) and should be excluded from the type series of C. nigrovenosus.
