Description
This set of videos is documenting the tradition of poison-root fishing in Rouku village, Western Province, Papua New Guinea. During dry season, when the swamps turn into little pools of water, people go and numb the fish in the water pools with the root of a particular tree (Derris pinata). Most of the videos in this dataset are observational. One video and audio file is from an interview.
The dataset includes:
- observational video (01.mpeg - 08.mpeg and 10.mpeg)
- an interview with Daure Srik Kaumb explaining what people are doing (09.mpeg + 09.wav)
- transcription file of the interview (09.eaf)
Note that the transcription file in this record is not up to date! For an updated version of this file, please download the most recent version of the Komnzo text corpus as a zip-file under 10.5281/zenodo.1306246
The material was recorded by Christian Döhler as part of a language documentation project for his PhD. The project was located at the School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University, Canberra. For the most part it was funded by the DOBES project of the Volkswagen Foundation.
