Artemiidae Grochowski 1895

Description

Family Artemiidae Grochowski, 1895

Artemia franciscana Kellog, 1906. In older literature, only Artemia salina (Linnaeus, 1758) is mentioned as this was considered a cosmopolitan species. Today, we know more existing Artemia species (Assem et al. 2010). In Bonaire, A. franciscana Kellog, 1906 is present (Van Stappen 1996; Camargo et al. 2002).All observations in the Dutch Caribbean of A. salina probably belong to A. franciscana. Wagenaar Hummelinck (1933) found this species in Bonaire (Goto-meer, Salinja Martinus, Pekelmeer, and Salinja Plenchi). Rammner (1936) reported this species for Bonaire, Curaçao, and St Maarten. In the period of 1960–1964, several salt pans were sampled in Bonaire and Curaçao to investigate the ecology of this species (Kristensen & Hulscher-Emeis 1972). Vanhaecke et al. (1987) found it on St Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire (Duinmeer, Gotomeer, Pekelmeer, Martinus, and Slagbaai), and Curaçao (Fuik and Rifwater). Van Stappen (1996) reported Artemia spec. for St Maarten, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao; only mentioning A. franciscana for Duinmeer on Bonaire. The hypersaline habitat in Rif-Sint Marie on Curaçao is threatened by the supply of sea water causing the lake to become less saline (Vermeij & Chamberland 2012).
