Euwallacea Hopkins
Description
Genus Euwallacea Hopkins: definition revised
Euwallacea Hopkins 1915: 54, type species: Xyleborus wallacei Blandford, original designation. Wood & Bright 1992: 685; Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal 2009:100; Hulcr & Cognato, 2013: 88.
Wallacellus Hulcr and Cognato 2010: 27, type species: Wallacellus piceus (Motschulsky), original designation. Hulcr & Cognato 2013: 133. new synonymy.
Revised diagnosis. Robust species (only exceptionally slender in E. piceus). Pronotum with anterolateral corners inflated, resulting in subquadrate shape of the pronotum in dorsal aspect (subrectangular in elongated species). Antennal club rounded, not truncated; the first segment of the club prominent, corneous, its distal edge straight; segments 2 and 3 either soft and pubescent or marginally corneous; segment 3 and in some species also segment 2 visible also on posterior side (club type 2 or 3 sensu Hulcr et al. 2007). Large species have scapus much longer than pedicel. Protibiae in large species distinctly triangular, slender on upper (proximal) part, broad and denticulate on lower (distal) part in smaller species protibia is broad, with evenly rounded edge. Protibial denticles in large species large, distinctly longer than wide, bases of denticles distinctly enlarged, conical. In smaller species denticles small, more abundant, their sockets slightly enlarged. Between 3 to 11 protibial denticles present. Elytral declivity gradualy descending, distinctly broadened laterally, interstria 7 elevated into a costa. Declivity never steep or truncated. Size range 2.8-5.7 mm. Color uniform black (piceous), sometimes dark brown, exceptionally light brown in E. similis and some E. fornicatus.
Comment. Based on the molecular phylogeny presented here, Wallacellus (Hulcr & Cognato 2010) is polyphyletic and its constituent species are dispersed throughout the Euwallacea clade. The genus name Wallacellus is placed into junior synonymy with Euwallacea.
