Neobathyclupea Prokofiev 2015

Description

Neobathyclupea Prokofiev, 2015

Type species: Bathyclupea malayana Weber, 1913.

Remarks. Neobathyclupea differs from Bathyclupea Alcock, 1891, the only other genus of the family, in the welldeveloped pleural ribs on the 9th vertebra (vs. reduced or absent), in the lower dorsal- and anal-fin ray counts (9 vs. 10 and 26–30 vs. 30–40, respectively), in the darkly pigmented gill arches and, in some cases, mouth (vs. mouth cavity and gill arches pale), and in the absence of serration along the ventral margin of the preopercle (but see discussion below). This genus currently comprises 7 species: N. argentea (Goode & Bean, 1896) (north-western and western central Atlantic), N. elongata (Trunov, 1975) (south-eastern Atlantic, southern Indo-Pacific eastward to New Zealand), N. gracilis (Fowler, 1938) (western Pacific), N. japanotaiwana (Prokofiev, 2014) (off southern Japan and Taiwan), N. malayana (Weber, 1913) (Indo-West-Pacific), N. megaceps (Fowler, 1938) (off Philippines), and N. melanoptera, new species (western Indian Ocean).
