Chaetodon ficheuri Arambourg 1927

Description

ANATOMY OF CHAETODON FICHEURI ARAMBOURG, 1927 EXTERNAL MORPHOLOGY

Measurements for C. ficheuri are summarized in Table 1. The body is deep, ovoid and laterally compressed (Figs 2, 3). The snout is moderately developed. The specimens examined have a rather variable snout length, mainly related to taphonomic displacement (protrusion or intrusion) of the jaws. The orbit is large. The dorsal fin is continuous with spines that increase gradually in height posteriorly. The soft rays of the centre of the dorsal and anal fins are longer than the others, producing a vertically orientated posterior portion of such fins. Of the three anal fin spines, the middle is best developed, slightly longer and stronger than the third. The pectoral fin inserts low on the body. The pelvic fin originates below and slightly posterior to the pectoral fin. The caudal fin is truncate and extends well beyond the posterior edges of the dorsal and anal fins.
