Description

69. Theognete baranowskii Anderson, new species (Figures 241, 259, 276)

Diagnosis. Size. Length, male, 3.11–3.66mm; female, 3.03–3.46mm. Width, male, 1.81–1.89mm; female, 1.84–1.92mm. As for T. kaulbarsi except elytra rounded and globose; scrobes broadly visible in dorsal view; pronotum with some scales in anterior half of disk concentrated in paramedian tufts; sutural stria and second stria finely, distinctly punctate and impressed; posterolateral area of elytra with 3–4 punctures. Tergite VIII in female emarginate in middle. Aedeagus as in Fig. 259.

Geographical distribution. México (Oaxaca).

Natural history. Collected from berlese extraction of oak forest, oak-pine forest, mixed pine forest and boreal forest leaf litter at elevations from 2100–2900m.

Derivation of specific name. Named after Rickard Baranowski of Lund, Sweden.

Material examined. 31♂, 9♀♀ (CMNC, CWOB, ECOS, MZLU). Holotype ♂ (CMNC): MÉXICO: Oaxaca. 64.5km S. W. Valle Nacional, KM 117.5, 2600m, 28.VII.1992, 92-039, R. S. Anderson, oak forest leaf litter berlese / HOLOTYPE ♂, Theognete baranowskii sp. nov., R.S. Anderson. Aedeagus extracted. Paratypes: MÉXICO. Oaxaca. Valle Nacional (61 km. S.), 2900m, 29.IX.1990, R. Baranowski, sifting litter boreal forest (1♂ MZLU). Valle Nacional (66 km. S.), 2800m, 2.X.1990, R. Baranowski, sifting litter in mixed pine forest (2♂, 1♀ MZLU). Valle Nacional (68 km. S.), 2600m, 3.X.1986, R. Baranowski, sifting litter in pine-oak forest (1♂, 1♀ MZLU). Valle Nacional (70 km. S.), 2700m, 29.IX.1990, R. Baranowski, sifting litter in mixed pine forest (14♂, 4♀♀ ECOS, MZLU) (6♂, 3♀♀ CMNC). Valle Nacional (70 km. S.), 2500m, 10.IX.1986, R. Baranowski, sifting litter in pine-oak forest (3♂ MZLU). Oaxaca (87 km. N.), 2700m, 13.XI.1989, R. Baranowski, sifting litter pine-oak forest (2♂ MZLU). Teotitlán del Camino (36 km. E.), 2100m, 26.IX.1990, R. Baranowski, sifting litter under shrubs mixed oak forest (1♂ MZLU).

Chorological relationships. Sympatric with T. bothynometopon, T. weiri, T. giselae, T. birdi, T. tomneyeae and T. semiopaca.
