Floracarus perrepae Knihinicki & Boczek 2002

Description

Floracarus perrepae Knihinicki & Boczek, 2002 (Fig. 4B)

Floracarus perrepae Knihinicki & Boczek, 2002: 242–244.

Floracarus perrepae; Goolsby et al., 2003: 36.

Floracarus perrepae; Goolsby et al., 2006b: 289.

Host. Lygodium microphyllum, L. reticulatum (Lygodiaceae).

Habit. Curling and distortion leaflets.

Distribution. Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China (Guangdong), India, Sri Lanka, Australia (Qld, Brisbane, Tully, Queensland, New South Wales, Northern Territory), Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia.

Remarks. This mite species is wide-spread in Asia and Australasia, as a biocontral agent for Old World climbing fern Lygodium microphyllum. Molecular and biological experiments have been done (Goolsby et al. 2003, 2005a & b, 2006a & b; Ozman & Goolsby 2005) to test the mite as a potential biological control agent against the fern. Freeman et al. (2005) did an ultrastructural study on the relationship between the mite species and the fern.
