Polymera Wiedemann 1821

Description

32. Polymera Wiedemann, 1821b: 44 [1821c: 39, 44].

ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: Polymera fusca Wiedemann, 1821.

TYPE SPECIES: Polymera fusca Wiedemann, 1821, by monotypy.

CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [teste Sabrosky (1999: 252)].

FAMILY: LIMONIIDAE.

REMARKS: This name has been confused in the literature because of the odd pagination of the three publication episodes of the Diptera exotica (see Table 1 above). The name Polymera appears on page 39 with an illustration of the wing but without included species. However, this page does not exist in Wiedemann (1821b), the version in which Arabic numeraled pages begin with page 43. Page 39 was added (with pages 39–42) in Wiedemann (1821c) (England, 1931). Macquart (1838: 64) thought that Polymera was created for Chironomus hirticornis Fabricius (which appears with Polymera on page 39) but this was published later than the original proposal of Polymera in Wiedemann (1821b: 44) that only has one included species (Polymera fusca Wiedemann, 1821).
